Sura 15: Al-Hijr Valley
(Al-Hijr)
In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

---

الر تلك ايات الكتاب وقران مبين

A.L.R.* These (letters) are proofs of this scripture; a profound Quran.

---

ربما يود الذين كفروا لو كانوا مسلمين

Certainly, those who disbelieved will wish they were submitters.

---

ذرهم ياكلوا ويتمتعوا ويلههم الامل فسوف يعلمون

Let them eat, enjoy, and remain blinded by wishful thinking; they will find out.

---

وما اهلكنا من قرية الا ولها كتاب معلوم

We never annihilated any community, except in accordance with a specific, predetermined time.

---

ما تسبق من امة اجلها وما يستاخرون

The end of any community can never be advanced, nor delayed.

---

وقالوا يا ايها الذي نزل عليه الذكر انك لمجنون

They said, “O you who received this reminder, you are crazy.

---

لو ما تاتينا بالملائكة ان كنت من الصادقين

“Why do you not bring down the angels, if you are truthful?”

---

ما ننزل الملائكة الا بالحق وما كانوا اذا منظرين

We do not send down the angels except for specific functions. Otherwise, no one will be respited.

---

God’s Messenger<br>of the Covenant*

---

انا نحن نزلنا الذكر وانا له لحافظون

Absolutely, we have revealed the reminder, and, absolutely, we will preserve it.*

---

ولقد ارسلنا من قبلك في شيع الاولين

We have sent (messengers) before you to the communities in the past.

---

وما ياتيهم من رسول الا كانوا به يستهزئون

Every time a messenger went to them, they ridiculed him.

---

كذلك نسلكه في قلوب المجرمين

We thus control the minds of the guilty.

---

لا يؤمنون به وقد خلت سنة الاولين

Consequently, they cannot believe in him. This has been the system since the past generations.

---

ولو فتحنا عليهم بابا من السماء فظلوا فيه يعرجون

Even if we opened for them a gate into the sky, through which they climb;

---

لقالوا انما سكرت ابصارنا بل نحن قوم مسحورون

they will say, “Our eyes have been deceived. We have been bewitched.”

---

ولقد جعلنا في السماء بروجا وزيناها للناظرين

We placed galaxies in the sky, and adorned it for the beholders.

---

وحفظناها من كل شيطان رجيم

And we guarded it against every rejected devil.

---

الا من استرق السمع فاتبعه شهاب مبين

If any of them sneaks around to listen, a mighty projectile will chase him back.

---

والارض مددناها والقينا فيها رواسي وانبتنا فيها من كل شيء موزون

As for the earth, we constructed it, and placed on it stabilizers (mountains), and we grew on it a perfect balance of everything.

---

وجعلنا لكم فيها معايش ومن لستم له برازقين

We made it habitable for you,* and for creatures you do not provide for.

---

وان من شيء الا عندنا خزائنه وما ننزله الا بقدر معلوم

There is nothing that we do not own infinite amounts thereof. But we send it down in precise measure.

---

وارسلنا الرياح لواقح فانزلنا من السماء ماء فاسقيناكموه وما انتم له بخازنين

And we send the winds as pollinators, and cause water to come down from the sky for you to drink. Otherwise, you could not keep it palatable.

---

وانا لنحن نحيي ونميت ونحن الوارثون

It is we who control life and death, and we are the ultimate inheritors.

---

ولقد علمنا المستقدمين منكم ولقد علمنا المستاخرين

And we fully know those among you who advance, and we fully know those who regress.

---

وان ربك هو يحشرهم انه حكيم عليم

Your Lord will surely summon them. He is Most Wise, Omniscient.

---

The Human Race

---

ولقد خلقنا الانسان من صلصال من حما مسنون

We created the human being from aged mud, like the potter’s clay.

---

والجان خلقناه من قبل من نار السموم

As for the jinns, we created them, before that, from blazing fire.

---

واذ قال ربك للملائكة اني خالق بشرا من صلصال من حما مسنون

Your Lord said to the angels, “I am creating a human being from aged mud, like the potter’s clay.

---

فاذا سويته ونفخت فيه من روحي فقعوا له ساجدين

“Once I perfect him, and blow into him from My spirit, you shall fall prostrate before him.”

---

فسجد الملائكة كلهم اجمعون

The angels fell prostrate; all of them,

---

الا ابليس ابى ان يكون مع الساجدين

except Iblis (Satan), He refused to be with the prostrators.

---

قال يا ابليس ما لك الا تكون مع الساجدين

He said, “O Iblis (Satan), why are you not with the prostrators?”

---

قال لم اكن لاسجد لبشر خلقته من صلصال من حما مسنون

He said, “I am not to prostrate before a human being, whom You created from aged mud, like the potter’s clay.”

---

قال فاخرج منها فانك رجيم

He said, “Therefore, you must get out; you are banished.

---

وان عليك اللعنة الى يوم الدين

“You have incurred My condemnation until the Day of Judgment.”

---

قال رب فانظرني الى يوم يبعثون

He said, “My Lord, respite me until the day they are resurrected.”

---

قال فانك من المنظرين

He said, “You are respited.

---

الى يوم الوقت المعلوم

“Until the specified day and time.”

---

قال رب بما اغويتني لازينن لهم في الارض ولاغوينهم اجمعين

He said, “My Lord, since You have willed that I go astray, I will surely entice them on earth; I will send them all astray.

---

الا عبادك منهم المخلصين

“Except those among Your worshipers who are devoted absolutely to You alone.”

---

قال هذا صراط علي مستقيم

He said, “This is a law that is inviolable.

---

ان عبادي ليس لك عليهم سلطان الا من اتبعك من الغاوين

“You have no power over My servants. You only have power over the strayers who follow you.

---

وان جهنم لموعدهم اجمعين

“And Hell awaits them all.

---

لها سبعة ابواب لكل باب منهم جزء مقسوم

“It will have seven gates. Each gate will get a specific share of them.”

---

ان المتقين في جنات وعيون

As for the righteous, they will enjoy gardens and springs.

---

ادخلوها بسلام امنين

Enter therein, peaceful and secure.

---

ونزعنا ما في صدورهم من غل اخوانا على سرر متقابلين

We remove all jealousy from their hearts. Like one family, they will be on adjacent furnishings.

---

لا يمسهم فيها نصب وما هم منها بمخرجين

Never will they suffer any fatigue therein; never will they be evicted therefrom.

---

نبئ عبادي اني انا الغفور الرحيم

Inform My servants that I am the Forgiver, Most Merciful.

---

وان عذابي هو العذاب الاليم

And that My retribution is the most painful retribution.

---

Angels Visit Abraham

---

ونبئهم عن ضيف ابراهيم

Inform them about Abraham’s guests.

---

اذ دخلوا عليه فقالوا سلاما قال انا منكم وجلون

When they entered his quarters, they said, “Peace.” He said, “We are apprehensive about you.”

---

قالوا لا توجل انا نبشرك بغلام عليم

They said, “Do not be apprehensive. We have good news for you: an enlightened son.”

---

قال ابشرتموني على ان مسني الكبر فبم تبشرون

He said, “How can you give me such good news, when I am so old?” Do you still give me this good news?

---

قالوا بشرناك بالحق فلا تكن من القانطين

They said, “The good news we give you is true; do not despair.”

---

قال ومن يقنط من رحمة ربه الا الضالون

He said, “None despairs of his Lord’s mercy, except the strayers.”

---

قال فما خطبكم ايها المرسلون

He said, “What is your mission, O messengers?”

---

قالوا انا ارسلنا الى قوم مجرمين

They said, “We are being dispatched to guilty people.

---

الا ال لوط انا لمنجوهم اجمعين

“As for Lot’s family, we will save them all.

---

الا امراته قدرنا انها لمن الغابرين

“But not his wife; she is destined to be with the doomed.”

---

Lot

---

فلما جاء ال لوط المرسلون

The messengers went to Lot’s town.

---

قال انكم قوم منكرون

He said, “You are unknown people.”

---

قالوا بل جئناك بما كانوا فيه يمترون

They said, “We bring to you what they have been doubting.

---

واتيناك بالحق وانا لصادقون

“We bring to you the truth; we are truthful.

---

فاسر باهلك بقطع من الليل واتبع ادبارهم ولا يلتفت منكم احد وامضوا حيث تؤمرون

“You shall take your family during the night. Stay behind them, and make sure that none of you looks back. Go straight as commanded.”

---

وقضينا اليه ذلك الامر ان دابر هؤلاء مقطوع مصبحين

We delivered to him this command: those people are to be annihilated in the morning.

---

وجاء اهل المدينة يستبشرون

The people of the city came joyfully.

---

قال ان هؤلاء ضيفي فلا تفضحون

He said, “These are my guests; do not embarrass me.

---

واتقوا الله ولا تخزون

“Fear GOD, and do not shame me.”

---

قالوا اولم ننهك عن العالمين

They said, “Did we not enjoin you from contacting anyone?”

---

قال هؤلاء بناتي ان كنتم فاعلين

He said, “Here are my daughters, if you must.”

---

لعمرك انهم لفي سكرتهم يعمهون

But, alas, they were totally blinded by their lust.

---

فاخذتهم الصيحة مشرقين

Consequently, the disaster struck them in the morning.

---

فجعلنا عاليها سافلها وامطرنا عليهم حجارة من سجيل

We turned it upside down, and showered them with devastating rocks.

---

ان في ذلك لايات للمتوسمين

This is a lesson for those who possess intelligence.

---

وانها لبسبيل مقيم

This will always be the system.

---

ان في ذلك لاية للمؤمنين

This is a sign for the believers.

---

وان كان اصحاب الايكة لظالمين

The people of the woods also were transgressors.

---

فانتقمنا منهم وانهما لبامام مبين

Consequently, we avenged from them, and both communities are fully documented.

---

ولقد كذب اصحاب الحجر المرسلين

The people of Al-Hijr disbelieved the messengers.

---

واتيناهم اياتنا فكانوا عنها معرضين

We gave them our revelations, but they disregarded them.

---

وكانوا ينحتون من الجبال بيوتا امنين

They used to carve secure homes out of the mountains.

---

فاخذتهم الصيحة مصبحين

The disaster hit them in the morning.

---

فما اغنى عنهم ما كانوا يكسبون

What they hoarded did not help them.

---

End of the World<br>Unveiled*

---

وما خلقنا السماوات والارض وما بينهما الا بالحق وان الساعة لاتية فاصفح الصفح الجميل

We did not create the heavens and the earth, and everything between them, except for a specific purpose. The end of the world will come, so treat them with benign neglect.

---

ان ربك هو الخلاق العليم

Your Lord is the Creator, the Omniscient.

---

ولقد اتيناك سبعا من المثاني والقران العظيم

We have given you the seven pairs, and the great Quran.

---

لا تمدن عينيك الى ما متعنا به ازواجا منهم ولا تحزن عليهم واخفض جناحك للمؤمنين

Do not be jealous of what we bestowed upon the other (messengers), and do not be saddened (by the disbelievers), and lower your wing for the believers.

---

وقل اني انا النذير المبين

And proclaim: “I am the manifest warner.”

---

كما انزلنا على المقتسمين

We will deal with the dividers.

---

الذين جعلوا القران عضين

They accept the Quran only partially.

---

فوربك لنسالنهم اجمعين

By your Lord, we will question them all,

---

عما كانوا يعملون

about everything they have done.

---

فاصدع بما تؤمر واعرض عن المشركين

Therefore, carry out the orders given to you, and disregard the idol worshipers.

---

انا كفيناك المستهزئين

We will spare you the mockers,

---

الذين يجعلون مع الله الها اخر فسوف يعلمون

who set up another god beside GOD. They will surely find out.

---

ولقد نعلم انك يضيق صدرك بما يقولون

We know full well that you may be annoyed by their utterances.

---

فسبح بحمد ربك وكن من الساجدين

You shall sing the praises of your Lord, and be with the prostrators.

---

واعبد ربك حتى ياتيك اليقين

And worship your Lord, in order to attain certainty.*
