Sura 79: The Snatchers
(Al-Naaze‘aat)
In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

---

والنازعات غرقا

The (angels who) snatch (the souls of the disbelievers) forcibly.

---

والناشطات نشطا

And those who gently take (the souls of the believers) joyfully.

---

والسابحات سبحا

And those floating everywhere.

---

فالسابقات سبقا

Eagerly racing with one another—

---

فالمدبرات امرا

to carry out various commands.

---

يوم ترجف الراجفة

The day the quake quakes.

---

تتبعها الرادفة

Followed by the second blow.

---

قلوب يومئذ واجفة

Certain minds will be terrified.

---

ابصارها خاشعة

Their eyes will be subdued.

---

يقولون اانا لمردودون في الحافرة

They will say, “We have been recreated from the grave!

---

ااذا كنا عظاما نخرة

“How did this happen after we had turned into rotten bones?”

---

قالوا تلك اذا كرة خاسرة

They had said, “This is an impossible recurrence.”

---

فانما هي زجرة واحدة

All it takes is one nudge.

---

فاذا هم بالساهرة

Whereupon they get up.

---

هل اتاك حديث موسى

Have you known about the history of Moses?

---

اذ ناداه ربه بالواد المقدس طوى

His Lord called him at the holy valley of Tuwaa.

---

اذهب الى فرعون انه طغى

“Go to Pharaoh; he has transgressed.”

---

فقل هل لك الى ان تزكى

Tell him, “Would you not reform?

---

واهديك الى ربك فتخشى

“Let me guide you to your Lord, that you may turn reverent.”

---

فاراه الاية الكبرى

He then showed him the great miracle.

---

فكذب وعصى

But he disbelieved and rebelled.

---

ثم ادبر يسعى

Then he turned away in a hurry.

---

فحشر فنادى

He summoned and proclaimed.

---

فقال انا ربكم الاعلى

He said, “I am your Lord; most high.”

---

فاخذه الله نكال الاخرة والاولى

Consequently, GOD committed him to the retribution in the Hereafter, as well as in the first life.

---

ان في ذلك لعبرة لمن يخشى

This is a lesson for the reverent.

---

اانتم اشد خلقا ام السماء بناها

Are you more difficult to create than the heaven? He constructed it.

---

رفع سمكها فسواها

He raised its masses, and perfected it.

---

واغطش ليلها واخرج ضحاها

He made its night dark, and brightened its morn.

---

والارض بعد ذلك دحاها

He made the earth egg-shaped.*

---

اخرج منها ماءها ومرعاها

From it, He produced its own water and pasture.

---

والجبال ارساها

He established the mountains.

---

متاعا لكم ولانعامكم

All this to provide life support for you and your animals.

---

فاذا جاءت الطامة الكبرى

Then, when the great blow comes.

---

يوم يتذكر الانسان ما سعى

That is the day when the human will remember everything he did.

---

وبرزت الجحيم لمن يرى

Hell will be brought into existence.

---

فاما من طغى

As for the one who transgressed.

---

واثر الحياة الدنيا

Who was preoccupied with this life.

---

فان الجحيم هي الماوى

Hell will be the abode.

---

واما من خاف مقام ربه ونهى النفس عن الهوى

As for the one who reverenced the majesty of his Lord, and enjoined the self from sinful lusts.

---

فان الجنة هي الماوى

Paradise will be the abode.

---

يسالونك عن الساعة ايان مرساها

They ask you about the Hour, and when it will take place!

---

فيم انت من ذكراها

It is not you (Muhammad) who is destined to announce its time.

---

الى ربك منتهاها

Your Lord decides its fate.

---

انما انت منذر من يخشاها

Your mission is to warn those who expect it.

---

كانهم يوم يرونها لم يلبثوا الا عشية او ضحاها

The day they see it, they will feel as if they lasted one evening or half a day.
